Four Ways to Create a Positive Mindset

It can be hard to stay positive, especially in trying times such as now.

On New Years Day Danielle Dionne, our former Director of Mental Health, and Jane Smith, our Director of Public Relations, spoke about 8 ways to create a positive mindset. Below we will touch on some of the ideas they spoke about. We hope these inspire you and maybe you try to cultivate them into your daily routine!

  1. Make an effort to start fresh each day

Each morning, try to wake up and make or take a step toward letting go of whatever it is that you feel upset about. A great way to do this could be to forgive someone who may have upset or hurt you. This allows you to move forward without letting feelings of hurt or sadness hold you back.  Maybe yesterday your boss said something to you that hurt your feelings and you cannot let it go. Try to forgive this person and move forward. While this is not easy and may never be fully possible, making a conscious effort to let go of the negative things that upset you is an incredible way to encourage positivity.

  1.  Identify what you are thankful for

Identifying the things that you are grateful for can be a game-changer. This is because by focusing on the good things in your life can bring you out of negative thought loops. It can be as simple as waking up and writing down five things that you are grateful for. Possibly you are grateful to have clean water or a healthy parent or loved one in your life. Taking the time to look at the things you are grateful for gives your brain a chance to focus on the parts of your life that make you full. Over time, this can give you a sense of positivity even when things get tough.

  1. Cultivate a set of affirmations

Try to say positive affirmations to yourself every single day. Whether it be “I am exactly where I am supposed to be” or “today will be a GREAT day”. The words we say to ourselves are SO powerful and when we recite something over and over, it becomes second nature to hear them. The hope is that in saying positive things to ourselves, we begin to believe these affirmations and manifest positivity into our daily lives.

  1. Practice meditation and or mindfulness

Meditation and mindfulness and two things that can really help you get in touch with yourself and feel calmer, at ease, and positive about your daily life. Meditation helps one become aware of their thoughts and feelings without having an attachment to them. For a lot of people, the idea of meditation can be extremely intimidating and scary, so they may not try it. Thankfully there are several apps that can guide you through meditation and teach you about mindfulness.

Many use apps such as HeadSpace, Calm, Simple Habit, and Mindful Minute but there are tons of others that can tailor to different needs and levels.

“Meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person, or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and understanding how and why you think and feel the way you do, and getting a healthy sense of perspective in the process.” – Andy Puddicombe, Headspace founder
