September is National Recovery Month in the United States!

National Recovery Month, “works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible” (National Recovery Month, 2021).

Addiction is often misunderstood and stigmatized. Therefore, National Recovery Month also aims to help take away the stigma behind substance abuse and educate the public about it.

The reasons behind why certain people become addicted to drugs can boil down to biological makeup, one’s environment, and early childhood development.

Despite this, substance abuse disorders do not discriminate and it is important to treat those who are struggling with addiction with kindness and compassion. Recovery is possible.

If you are looking to celebrate this month, you can do so by sharing your story of recovery and by helping other people on their road to treatment or recovery.

If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse, you can reach out to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMSHA) National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
